The Science Museum is one of three British museums which, together with the National Railway Museum, York and the National Museum of Photography, Film & Television, Bradford, make up the National Museum of Science & Industry (NMSI). The Science Museum opened in 1857, as the South Kensington Museum, on land purchased with profits from the Great Exhibition of 1851.

The NMSI holds the world's largest and most significant collection illustrating the history and contemporary practice of science, technology, medicine and industry. In addition to the permanent collections and galleries (from "Nuclear Physics and Power" to "Garden" and "Things" for the youngsters) the Science Museum features temporary exhibitions, some of which destined to travel all around the world. The Museum welcomes about 1.6 million visitors per year. About 15% of the Museum's collections are on display to the public at any one time.
