Surveying the State of IPv6 Deployment in Australia and China

Overview

The unallocated IPv4 address space is now almost exhausted and organisations in Australia and China increasingly use IPv6. This research project aims to shed some light on the current state and the trajectory of IPv6 deployment in organisations in Australia and China. The goals of the study are to get an accurate picture of the current deployment state, identify what drives and hinders IPv6 deployment, map out the future trajectory for IPv6 deployment, and determine which perceived alternatives to IPv6, e.g. network address translation (NAT), are considered as remedy for IPv4 address shortages.

The project is the first recipient of the 2015 APNIC Internet Operations Research Grants, which are administered by ISIF Asia.

Survey

Our study is based on a survey that is completely anonymous. The outcomes of this study will help to provide a greater understanding of the IPv6 deployment. This understanding will not only benefit people's future business decisions related to IPv6, but hopefully will also be translated into actions to further improve the transition to IPv6.
