Doctorates (and Masters of Philosophy) in the School of Information
Technology
The School of IT offers research opportunities in a range of
Computer Science and Information Systems related areas. A friendly,
cooperative working environment which encourages and supports
both specialised and cross-disciplinary projects. Qualified staff
combine their own research programs with supervision of and collaboration
with research students working on advanced IT technologies, theories
and social-cultural impact studies.
Computer Science research covers a range of theoretical and applied
work. Particular strengths include image recognition, image processing,
parallel computing, intelligent agents, complex adaptive systems
and bioinformatics. Projects involving distributed systems, software
engineering, communication networks and computer security are
also under way.
Information Systems research enhances and complements the technological
work by casting it into a social, cultural and organisational
context. For example, the School studies indigenous and end-user
construction of systems of information. The role of specific technologies
within systemic human activities is addressed in several lines
of research, especially in IS development computing education
and decision support. Human-computer interaction, multimedia and
culture-specific IS are other major themes of research.
The range of research interests of potential supervisors can
be gauged from the school research groups.
