Research
in the School of Information Technology
The School of IT at Murdoch, embracing Computer Science
and Information Systems programmes is an excellent environment
in which to pursue research in a variety of specialised and cross-disciplinary
areas. Highly qualified staff, dedicated research laboratories
and an ethos of interdisciplinarity provides a unique mix ranging
from advanced technologies to cultural issues.
Computer Science research in the School of IT covers a range
of topics from theoretical to application oriented work. Particular
strengths include image recognition and processing, parallel computing,
complex adaptive systems and bioinformatics. Distributed systems,
software engineering and communication networks are also important
areas of research effort.
Information Systems research both enhances and complements the
more technological emphasis of Computer Science. Covering social,
cultural and organisational aspects of IT, with an emphasis on
indigenous and end-user construction of systems of information,
IS research is more broadly conceived. The role of specific technologies
within systemic human activity is addressed in several lines of
research, especially in IS development, end user computing, computing
education and decision support. HCI, multimedia and culture specific
developments are other major themes of research.
