Bachelor of Science in Computer
Science
Computer Science at Murdoch involves the study and design of processes
and techniques for problem solving using computational methods and
technology. The Computer Science Programme provides:
- The basic principles and theory used in developing computational
solutions to problems including a study of data structures,
algorithms, and programming languages, and their use in translating
solutions into software systems.
- A strong grounding in the philosophies and conceptual
bases of software and hardware architectures. Examples and practical
applications include databases, user-interfaces, data communications,
and the control and utilisation of computer systems.
- Acquisition of Software Engineering techniques and skills
in analysis, design, implementation and project management in
a team environment. Experience is gained in the application
of these skills to the production and maintenance of high quality
software systems.
The Computer Sciences Programme encourages the development of
interpersonal and communications skills and the integration of
Computer Science with studies in other disciplines.
Career Opportunities
Excellent career opportunities exist for Computer Science graduates
in business, industry and government as programmers, systems analysts,
computer systems and network managers, user support officers and
software engineers.
The Computer Science programme has been specifically designed
to meet the professional requirements for Computer Scientists.
This degree offers accreditation with the Australian Computer
Society at the Professional level.
The Computer Science Programme offers an undergraduate degree,
a Bachelor
of Science (BSc) in Computer Science, which involves three
years of full-time (or equivalent part-time) study with an optional
fourth year of study for those qualified to undertake an Honours
degree. Details are available from the University handbook.
Research degrees leading
to an MPhil or a PhD in Computer Science are also offered. The
School of IT also offers an MSc in Information Technology.
Graduates of non-IT disciplines may wish to enrol in Graduate
Diploma in Computer Studies to obtain professional IT computing
skills to supplement their initial degree.
