Fay is Emeritus Associate Professor at Murdoch University and Adjunct Associate Professor at the Australian National University. She has an Associate Diploma in Piano Performance, Bachelor of Arts (Psychology and Sociology), Master of Cognitive Science and Doctor of Philosophy (Communication Studies), and is a Member of the Australian Computer Society. Her current research interests are social, cultural and economic aspects of computer-mediated communication and CSCW, group dynamics and e-learning. She has published 1 authored book, 7 edited books, 9 edited proceedings, and more than 70 papers in journals, books and conference proceedings. She is on the editorial board of the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication, New Media and Society, International Journal of e-Learning, Human Communication Research, International Journal of Education and Development using Information and Communication Technologies, and Journal of Electronic Commerce in Organizations. With Charles Ess, she has co-chaired five international and interdisciplinary conferences on Cultural Attitudes towards Technology and Communication (CATaC). Fay has given invited talks in numerous countries including the USA, South Africa, Russia, Germany, Israel, and Sweden.
